Anxiety is our body’s natural response to danger – it helps focus our mental abilities as we prepare for fight or flight. While some amount of anxiety can actually be good, people who struggle with anxiety disorders have so much anxiety that it makes it hard to carry out even the smallest of tasks. The worries and stress they face go beyond anything experienced by normal people throughout the day and can impede nearly every aspect of the individual’s life. They may find that they’re able to function in society, have meaningful relationships, or cope with everyday stresses. They may isolate themselves from loved ones or hole themselves up at home, fearful of another anxiety attack. They may have begun to feel hopeless, alone, and a slave to their anxiety.

Anxiety disorders is a blanket term to describe many different types of conditions including panic disorder, social anxiety disorder/social phobia, specific phobias, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).  Anxiety disorders may appear very dissimilar from person to person. One person may suffer from extreme panic attacks that occur without notice, while another person may become panicked at the thought of going to a party. Another person may struggle with a debilitating fear of driving, or uncontrollable, intrusive thoughts. Yet another may live in a constant state of unpleasant tension, worrying about everything. Despite their differences, all anxiety disorders have one thing in common – they all include persistent fears and worries in situations where most people wouldn’t feel vulnerable.

Many people who have anxiety disorders also suffer from depression; in fact, the two mental illnesses are thought to be the result of the same biological function, which explains why so many who have anxiety disorders also have depression. Unfortunately, the combination of anxiety and depression only aggravates the symptoms of each mental illness until an individual feels completely at the end of his or her rope. Fortunately, with proper care at a treatment clinic, therapies, and medication, both depression and anxiety disorders are treatable conditions. You don’t have to live like this one second longer – Delta Behavioral Health is here to help you learn to manage your disorders and return to your community as a happy, healthy individual.

Types of Treatment

Types of anxiety disorder treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

At Delta Specialty Hospital, we’ve learned that the best way to treat anxiety disorders is through a combination of medications and therapeutic modalities. When you come to us for help to treat your anxiety disorders, we will spend a great deal of time performing thorough medical and psychological evaluations. We’ll take our findings and work with you to create a treatment plan for your stay with us. We believe that you should take a front seat while working through your anxiety and we’ll be beside you every step of the way.

Should you come to us with an addiction problem after struggling to self-medicate the symptoms of your anxiety disorder, the first step in your treatment will be medically monitored detoxification. We understand how frightening the concept of detox can be, so we’re going to carefully explain everything we do before we do it so you’ll always know what will happen next. You’ll be safely and effectively detoxed from whatever substances you’ve been abusing and medically stabilized before you join our inpatient anxiety treatment.

Medication may be used only at the beginning of your stay with us to help control unwanted symptoms or manage withdrawal, then gradually tapered down as you learn more effective coping mechanisms. Some individuals will require long-term medication management in the event they’re struggling with a co-occurring disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder. Your medication needs will be discussed with your treatment team and evaluated throughout your stay. In addition to medication and detox, we offer a number of therapeutic interventions to help you learn to manage your anxiety disorder.

Individual therapy is used to help you connect one-on-one with a trained therapist to unearth the roots of your anxiety disorder. You may spend time working on triggers and how to cope with them as well as developing coping skills for challenges in your life.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an important part of our therapeutic process as we’ve found that challenging your negative thoughts and refocusing them to be more positive a great way for individuals with anxiety disorders to refocus their thoughts about the world.

Group therapy is a very important part of our therapeutic process at Delta. We’ve learned through years of experience that one of the most successful ways to manage anxiety disorders is by connecting individuals struggling with similar challenges. We proudly offer psychoeducational and process groups to allow you to better come to terms with your illness and ways to manage it.

As we know that you are part of a bigger unit of individuals, we aim to include your family in your recovery sessions. We’ll address anxiety disorders, educate your family about recovery, and make certain they have the opportunity to discuss how your anxiety has affected others. We’ll also provide connections to outside support groups so your loved ones will be able to continue their healing.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for anxiety disorder

When your time with us comes to an end, you’ll work with your treatment team to devise an appropriate aftercare plan to allow for a continuation of care. We offer a number of services designed to meet your ongoing care needs. Our residential treatment center will allow you a similar structure to our inpatient treatment center to continue your recovery. If you’re more comfortable transitioning down to our step-down treatment options, we offer a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) both of which have helped many individuals continue their care in a less-structured environment. We also have an amazing outpatient treatment center, if you’re discharging to home with outpatient support. Whatever path you choose for your ongoing anxiety management, Delta wants you to remain successful, happy and fulfilled in your recovery process.

I came into the Delta Specialty Hospital treatment program experiencing severe anxiety and felt that I had lost complete control of my life. All of the therapists and support groups were incredibly patient, encouraging and helped me manage my symptoms.
