As we get older, we all experience instances in which our memory doesn’t seem to be what it once was. We may forget where we put the car keys, have to make lists when getting a few items at the grocery store, or have difficulty remembering a phone number. Maybe we begin to notice we’re becoming moody or agitated over small things or feeling less social than before. When these symptoms worsen over time, they may be signs of something beyond normal aging. These symptoms could indicate the development of dementia, a group of brain disorders that grow progressively worse as an individual ages. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with dementia, you may feel alone. However, as our senior population grows, so do the number of people affected by dementia.

If you have been diagnosed with dementia, you may be scared of what the future holds. If you care for someone with dementia, you may be feeling stressed and overwhelmed, unsure of how best to help your loved one. While memory loss is the most recognized symptom of dementia, individuals with dementia may also display agitation, angry outbursts, aggression, or violent behavior that is out of character. Caregivers often report feelings of overwhelming guilt and shame when they lose their patience with a loved one suffering from dementia.

Research has led to the development of medical and psychological treatments that can slow the progression of memory loss and other symptoms. At Delta, we provide comprehensive evaluations for individuals struggling with dementia. We spend time with you and your loved ones to get to know you as a person and learn about your history, strengths, resources, and routine. We then work with you to create the best treatment plan for your unique circumstances. If, after the evaluation, it becomes clear that home care is no longer an appropriate setting, we will work with you to determine possible placement options. At Delta we know how difficult this time can be for you, so we assure you that our compassionate staff will support you through the evaluation and treatment process as well as during the transition from our clinic to another setting.

Types of Treatment

Types of dementia treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

At Delta’s treatment center, we provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment options, including a Senior Care Unit. Our senior program focuses on inpatient diagnostic and treatment to address behavioral and medical health issues unique to seniors. We promote the highest level of behavioral, cognitive, psychological, and social functioning in each person who comes to us. All participants in our program are treated by an extensively trained staff in a compassionate, safe environment that promotes interaction with peers struggling with similar problems. Our treatment options include inpatient crisis stabilization with special services for seniors who are exhibiting altered mental status, behavior problems, agitation, or sudden memory loss. We attend to the needs of the whole person, including therapeutic activities for your individual psychiatric, emotional, social, and medical needs. Some of the treatment approaches we offer in our inpatient geriatric programs include:

Medication Evaluation and Management – In older individuals, we recognize that behavioral issues may be the result of medications, and we’ll work to alter the dose of a medication or change medications entirely.

Family Therapy – We provide numerous opportunities for family therapy sessions, informal interactions with our staff to answer questions or simply receive the support you need during a difficult time. Family members are included, and we encourage family visitation frequently. We also offer family therapy sessions for all loved ones to attend.

Reminiscent Therapy (RT) – Developed specifically for dementia patients, RT involves the discussion of the individual’s history of activities, events, and experiences in a group setting using tangible reminders such as photographs, familiar items from the individual’s past, favorite music, and songs.

Group Therapy – Our treatment for seniors who have received a diagnosis of dementia is predominantly group-based. Group therapy increases interaction and reinforces social skills for seniors who may be socially isolated or who lack a social network and provides contact with peers.

Discharge Planning – If the results of our comprehensive evaluation combined with family input indicate that the individual can no longer live safely in a home environment, our staff will work closely with family members to determine the best placement.

We also provide several additional services to help you return to your highest level of functioning. These include:

  • Nutrition and wellness counseling
  • Recreational activities
  • Physical therapy
  • Spiritual guidance
  • Therapeutic activities

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for dementia

At Delta’s mental health clinic, we are committed to ensuring that you obtain the most thorough assessment services. The more we learn about you, the more appropriate our recommendations become, until you and our treatment team have determined the next steps. These options may include a longer stay in our inpatient unit to provide stabilization, transfer to one of our medical units, transitioning to another living environment, or discharge to home.

If it is determined that a more intensive approach is warranted, you may choose to enter our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) which meets five days a week for a minimum of 20 hours per week or our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which meets three days a week for a minimum of 12 hours per week. These treatment options provide individuals with active treatment generally in a group setting, though individual and family therapy may be included depending on your individualized treatment plan. If you are discharging home, we will set up appropriate outpatient referrals and connections to community resources.

The staff treatment and medication that I got from Delta Specialty Hospital helped my dementia a lot. I am so grateful to have gone there and would recommend anyone who is dealing with dementia.
