Depressive disorders are a group of disorders that involve a hopeless, sad, blue, or depressed mood that surpasses normal feelings of sadness and grief. These disorders include major depressive disorder, dysthymia, and minor depressive disorder. All depressive disorders are a serious mental illness that can affect thoughts, feelings, moods, behaviors, and physical health. Intermittent periods of feeling relatively normal are interspersed with depression, making depression a life-long, chronic, yet treatable, illness.

Individuals who suffer from depression may feel a yawning sense of hopelessness about their lives, as each time they make a change, nothing improves. They may feel overwhelmed by their problems, unable to see that each problem is extremely solvable. Depression may cloud their ability to think clearly, act appropriately, or behave rationally. Some individuals with depression cry nearly all of the time, unable to speak to what caused the crying jag or even why they are crying. Loved ones may be unsure how to act, afraid that whatever they do to help will backfire, causing their loved one more pain. Depression is an illness that takes the color out of the world. Let Delta help you put it back.

Depression remains a growing problem in the United States, affecting 5-8% (or 25 million) individuals each year. Without prompt treatment from experienced behavioral healthcare providers, depression is likely to worsen over time. However, with proper treatment, such as what is offered at Delta Specialty Hospital, depression can be managed to allow individuals to live a full and complete life, away from the symptoms of depression. It’s time to take charge of your life – let Delta help you rediscover hope and joy.

Types of Treatment

Types of depression treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

At Delta, we’ve learned that the best treatments for depression involve a combination of medication management and various therapeutic modalities. We’ll use the results of the thorough medical and psychological examinations to tailor your treatment to best meet your individual needs. We know that depression treatment isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, so our specialized treatment team will work hard to make sure that your plan of care best fits your needs.

If it is determined that you have come to us addicted to a substance, you will likely enter into our medically monitored detoxification treatment. It is there that we will safely and effectively rid your body of all unwanted substances and stabilize you medically so that you are best able to focus on your depression treatment. Once you are stabilized, you will enter into our depression rehab center.

Medication may be prescribed at the beginning of your stay to help ease the unpleasant symptoms of withdrawal or to help you control uncomfortable symptoms. Many people find that they can be weaned off these medications as they learn more adaptive coping strategies. Others will find that they require long-term medication management to best help them recover from depression. The usage of medication will be addressed in your plan of care.

Individual therapy may be used during your stay with us so that you have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a trained therapist. Our individual therapy sessions are primarily solutions-focused, which means that you’ll work through problems in your life and unearth solutions to help ease your burden.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy we use when we treat individuals with depression. CBT allows us to focus on negative ways of thinking and how they are impacting your behaviors. We’ll challenge those negative thoughts so that you can replace them with more positive ways of viewing the world.

Group therapy is our primary therapeutic modality at Delta, as we firmly believe that you learn best when working with a group of individuals struggling with similar conditions. Through others, you will learn that you are not alone, that there are solutions available to you, and that others can help guide you on the right path for depression recovery. Our groups are a combination of process-based and psychoeducational to allow you to learn and process your emotions in a group setting.

No one is an island. This is why we at Delta focus on treating the whole family, as we understand how much your depression may have impacted your loved ones. Family sessions will focus upon ways your depression has impacted others, as well as ways your family can support you as you recover from depression. We’ll provide contacts to community resources available to your loved ones to allow them to continue to heal.

In addition to traditional therapeutic modalities, Delta is proud to offer you experiential treatments. These may include:

  • Recreational therapy
  • Therapeutic activities
  • Nutrition and wellness counseling
  • Spiritual guidance

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for depression

As your time with us draws to an end, we want to make sure that there are no lapses in your depression treatment and care. You’ll work side-by-side with your treatment team to create an aftercare plan that addresses your continuing needs. Delta is proud to offer a variety of aftercare options to allow you to continue your healing.

If you’re not quite ready to leave the structure of an inpatient clinic, we offer residential care to allow you to continue your healing there, away from the stresses of everyday life. In the event that you’re ready to leave behind the structured environment, we offer two ongoing outpatient treatment options to fit your needs. Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) can help individuals who still need a semi-structured environment to recover. If you’ve decided to discharge back into your community, we’ll provide referrals to our outpatient clinic and connect you with available community resources. Above all else, we want you to be successful in your recovery from depression.

I was diagnosed with depression 1 year ago and had weekly sessions with my Delta Specialty Hospital therapist whom is the most supportive and understanding person. Without her and the rest of the staff I would not be who I am today.
