Bipolar disorder, also called manic depression, is a chronic mental illness that is defined by unusual cycles of extremely elevated mood and intense amounts of energy followed by very low moods. While normal ups and downs are a part of life, individuals who have bipolar disorder will notice that the cycling of their moods affects nearly every part of their ability to function in society. If untreated, bipolar disorder can cause symptoms that lead to crumbling interpersonal relationships, declining occupational or academic performance, and even thoughts of suicide. With proper treatment and medication, individuals who have bipolar disorder can lead happy, fulfilled, and productive lives.

Bipolar disorder often develops in the late teen years or early adolescence with over half of the cases beginning before age 25. Bipolar disorder is notoriously challenging to identify in the early stages as the symptoms may appear to be a number of separate problems, not as the larger problem it is. Many individuals struggle with bipolar disorder for years before being properly diagnosed and treated. Similar to medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes, bipolar disorder must be managed throughout the lifetime.

Individuals who struggle with bipolar disorder experience extreme emotional states over distinct periods, called “cycles.” Manic episodes are marked by an overly excited happy state, while depressive states are marked by extremely sad and hopeless feelings. Sometimes, these cycles involve both symptoms of mania and depression at the same time, which is a “mixed episode,” and involve symptoms such as extreme energy and intense depression. Individuals with bipolar disorder note changes in their energy, activity, sleep, and behavioral states along with their mood states.

Without proper treatment, bipolar disorder often gets worse over time. An individual with bipolar disorder may notice more frequent and severe cycles of mania and depression than what was experienced at the onset of the illness. Delays and interruptions in treatment and proper diagnosis can lead to effects that can impact the life of the person with bipolar disorder. Untreated bipolar disorder can cause problems in interpersonal relationships, ability to function in society, as well as problems at work or school. At Delta, we understand the complexity of bipolar disorder and how vital it is that you find a treatment clinic that works for you. When you come to us for help for your bipolar disorder, we work hard to make sure that your treatment is manageable and effective.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for bipolar disorder Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

Untreated bipolar disorder can cause problems that far surpass those that most of us must overcome. The risky behavior exhibited during the manic stage of the disorder can lead to overspending sprees, unsafe sexual behaviors, and risk-taking. Some of these behaviors can lead to legal, medical, and financial consequences that last a lifetime. During mixed states, many individuals struggling with the extreme energy associated with manic episodes and the hopelessness associated with the depressive episodes can engage in self-harm or suicidal behaviors. It is vital that individuals with bipolar disorder seek treatment as soon as possible to minimize symptoms and work toward recovery.

Types of Treatment

Types of bipolar disorder treatment offered at Delta Specialty Hospital in Memphis, TN

At Delta, we’ve learned that the very best approach to bipolar treatment is through a combination of medication management and therapeutic modalities. When you come to us, you’ll undergo a complete medical and psychiatric examination to determine any health-related conditions that need medical attention as well as the presence of any substances in your body requiring detox. Your psychiatric examination will unearth any co-occurring mental illnesses and help us work with you to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to treat your needs.

If it has been determined that you require detox in order to best engage in the therapeutic process, you will first be admitted into our detox clinic for treatment. We know that detox can sound frightening for many, so we carefully explain each procedure before it happens so you always know what to expect. In detox, you’ll safely and effectively undergo medical detox to remove unwanted substances from your body. When you are medically stabilized, you will then enter into our rehab treatment.

Medication may be used at the beginning of your treatment in order to allow you to best manage withdrawal effects or symptoms and will slowly be tapered off. Most individuals who struggle with bipolar disorder do require long-term medication management in order to best manage their illness. Many individuals use mood-stabilizing medications to help manage the ups and downs of bipolar disorder. Other medications may be used as determined best by your treatment team. In addition to medication, we also offer a number of therapeutic methods to help you on the road to recovery.

Individual therapy is occasionally used when you require intimate time alone to work through some of the problems that bipolar has caused in your life. You’ll work with your therapist to determine solutions for the problems and challenges you may face.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is often used to help you identify the negative thought patterns that lead to problem behaviors. When these thoughts are determined, you will then be able to challenge them and replace them with more accurate ways of seeing the world.

Group therapy is the primary method of treatment we use at Delta as we believe that working together with individuals who are struggling with similar issues is a great way to process the emotions surrounding bipolar disorder. We offer both process-based and psychoeducational groups to allow you to work through your feelings and learn a bit more about bipolar disorder and the treatment process.

Family therapy is offered at Delta for individuals who require some assistance in working through challenging family dynamics. We’ll use family sessions to explore the ways in which bipolar disorder has impacted your loved ones as well as teach them about your disorder and the treatments you are receiving. We aim to help mend broken family relationships in a healing manner.

In addition to traditional therapeutic options, Delta proudly offers a number of experiential treatments to help heal the whole you. These methods may include:

  • Nutritional and wellness counseling
  • Spiritual guidance
  • Therapeutic activities
  • Recreational therapy

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for bipolar disorder

When your time with us comes to an end, we promise to work alongside you to develop an aftercare plan that meets all of your continuing treatment needs. You’ll work with your treatment team to decide which one of our many options will best suit you. Some individuals decide that they’re not quite ready to leave the structure of our inpatient care and would prefer to step down to our residential treatment option, which offers a similar structure. Others opt for one of our intensive outpatient options. We offer both a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for individuals ready to step down into outpatient treatment. If you are discharging home, we will provide you with appointments and referrals to our outpatient clinic along with connections to local community resources to allow for continued support. Whatever you decide to do when your inpatient stay comes to an end, we’ll be beside you every step of the way.
