Do any of these symptoms sound familiar? You could be suffering from a disease called Sleep Apnea. More than 18 million Americans suffer from this very common, but often undiagnosed sleep disorder. But, it is treatable and there is relief.

At the end of the day we expect and deserve a good night's sleep. Different people require different amounts of sleep, but the average person needs about 7-9 hours of sleep a night to feel rested and alert the next day. Sleep apnea deprives us of this much-needed sleep. What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

When a person stops breathing during sleep because his airway collapses and prevents air from getting into the lungs, this is called obstructive sleep apnea.

What causes the airway to collapse during sleep?

Several factors that may cause the airway to collapse are:

  • Nasal obstruction.
  • Excess tissue at back of throat, such as, large tonsils or uvula.
  • Excessive weight gain.
  • A decrease in the muscle tone holding the airway open.

How can I find out if I have Sleep Apnea?

See your physician and depending on your symptoms, he may recommend a sleep study at Delta Medical Center's Sleep Lab. This involves overnight stay while our sleep technicians monitor you closely. The technician will monitor your breathing, your oxygen level, movement, and snoring while you sleep. The Sleep Lab physician will evaluate your study and speak with your doctor regarding treatment options.

Click the link below to take our short survey; a score of 9 or more suggests you may need further evaluation to determine whether you have an underlying sleep disorder.  Consult your physician for advice on your sleep patterns.
